Like so many sites in Greece, Lycia, and Asia Minor, Brauron was once situated on the coast, but alluvial silt deposits have pushed the water line back away from the site. Brauron was inhabited from Neolithic times (with a few gaps in its habitation), but was an important sanctuary of Artemis until around the 3rd century BC, when tensions between Athens and Macedonia caused its final abandonment. The site today is beautifully preserved, with the temple grounds still showing much of its original splendor. It also features an unusual stone bridge over the stream created by Artemis' sacred spring, which still gives forth water.
