  • Many Roman citizens worshipped Egyptian gods. Herodes Atticus was a wealthy consul of Athens & good friend of Emperor Hadrian, owned two large villas, one in Kifissia & one near Astros, in the Peloponnese. He built this temple by the sea at the coast of Marathon in honour of the Egyptian gods Isis & Osiris. He also built a Roman bath complex - for the worshippers to cleanse themselves before entering the temple. Herodes Atticus (& his wife Regilla) owned an estate on the Marathon Plain.
