Borough of Edgewater, New Jersey, incorporated 1894 as the Borough of Undercliff, name changed in 1899. Its history has featured the founding of the first colony in Bergen County, Vriessendael in 1640, contribution to the Revolutionary War, a period as a sleepy pastoral town with resort hotels in the early 1800s, heavy industrialization beginning in the mid-1800s, brownfield land in the mid-late 1900s, and finally the transition to residential community starting in the late 20th century thru present.
