Between 1837 and 1842 the Croton aqueduct was constructed to supply fresh water to New York City. Along this route which covers 41 miles (66 km), are several ventilator shafts such as this one located in Irvington N.Y. It took 22 Hrs. with only gravity to cover the distance.
