The Borough of Raritan has a population of 6,881 (2010) and a total area of 2.0 square miles. The town of Raritan was originally established within Bridgewater Township on April 3, 1868. After a series of disputes with Bridgewater Township in the 1930s and 1940s, the separate Borough was founded on May 12, 1948. The Raritan train station offers New Jersey Transit service on the Raritan Valley Line.

One of the former residents of Raritan is Marine Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone who received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. He is honored annually by a parade in September.
