The lath house was designed by architects Bertram Goodhue and Carleton M. Winslow for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition to provide filtered light for plants. Building began in August 1913 and completed in July 1914. La Laguna, the larger of the two lagoons, was used during WWI to teach sailors how to swim and later during WWII to rehabilitate patients at the Naval Hospital.
