Lermontov Grotto (Pyatigorsk)

Russia / Stavropol / Goryachevodskiy / Pyatigorsk
grotto, interesting place, 1830s construction, object of cultural heritage of federal importance (Russia), tourist attraction

A decorative natural cave, modified for visitors in 1831 by architects the brothers Bernardazzi. The author Lermontov used this location in his story "The Princess Mary" as a meeting place of characters Pechorin and Vera.

In the 1971 movie "The Twelve Chairs" directed by Gaidai, this location was used with fake signs as a more picturesque substitute location for the actual Sinkhole (Proval) where Bender scammed the public by selling tickets to a free tourist site. The actual Proval is about 1 mile north west (1.4 km), up Gagarin boulevard < goo.gl/Jg5FwK > See movie clip showing this site : www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNZkUt0ePas
