Built in just 11 months, the Broadway Bridge was a special relief project during the Great Depression that primarily used manual labour. It was designed by engineers at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1932, a total of 1593 men worked around the clock to complete the structure at wages of 45 cents per hour for common labourers. Only married men were hired for the project and they could only work for an amount of time that depended on the size of the worker's family. The Broadway Bridge was even hand scrubbed from one end to the other upon completion.
The bridge was opened on November 11, 1932. At one time the City considered changing the name to George V Bridge in honour of the King.
