Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky" (ex "Faraday") started on February 6, 1996. The station is mainly meteorogical and geophysical observatory with introducing lasts years new researches in the ornithology, hydrology and human medicine.
New equipment has been installed at Vernadsky: high sensitive magnetometers to send the data in quasi-online to INTERMAGNET satellite system, the Shuman resonance receiver to monitor thunderstorm activity on the Earth.
The station is located on Galindez Island of Argentine Islands archipelago (65° 15’ S, 64° 16’ W) about 5 miles West of the Antarctic Peninsula. The coldest temperature:
-43,3 °C, the warmest: +11,8 °C.
About 300 days per year it is overcast and snowing.
