Designed by Canadian Open Champion Albert H. Murray, the 18-hole Kanawaki Golf Club opened in 1912 on farmland leased from several Kahnawake families. It has long had a reputation as one of the finest golf courses in Canada.
The name of the course comes from a mispronunciation of the name Kahnawake, which at the time of the club's establishment was known as Caughnawaga (yet another mispronunciation of Kahnawake).
It is also the filming location of the tournament scenes from the 2004 movie The Greatest Game Ever Played.
