This modern settlement located about 9.0 miles (14.5 km) to the south-west of its nearest main city, Jauharabad, is predominantly inhabited by some of the Mirpuris displaced after formation of a 97.7 sq. miles reservoir for Mangla Dam in the mid-sixties. It is also commonly known as Azam Colony in honour of its charismatic community leader, late Sufi Mohammad Azam. Like its parent city, Mirpur, this little Azad Kashmiri enclave is also relatively prosperous and has strong links with the United Kingdom, where a large number of its expatriates are settled in various industrial towns and cities.
