The Irvin I was created on the northeast side of the franklin mountians in the 1960s by students from Irvin High School. They used white paint, and painted large rocks which were arranged in an I formation. At some point in time, someone thought it would be funny to rearrange some of the rocks into the shape of an "A" (which can slightly be seen here), presumably to stand for Andress High School.

Unfortunately, this site has not been kept up for many many years and has degraded over time. It's a nice hike to get to this site though however, as you will be treated to a breath taking view of the northeast/east side of the city. If you're intrested in hiking to this location, simply take Hondo Pass road all the way west (up twoards the mountian) and park near the end of the road. The trail is blocked by a chain link fence constructed by the military to restrict access to their land (which the "I" is not located on, but the trail is located adjacent to a military reservation east of hondo pass drive), however there are ways around this. =)

  • Actually, the "I" dates back to the 1960's. During football games on Saturday nights, the outline of the "I" was illuminated, and it could be seen from the Home side of the stadium.
  • Awesome Simbared, thanks for the info!
