Once the prime shopping mall in Akron Ohio the first wing with Sears and 21 stores opened in 1975. A year later JCPenney opened as a second anchor. A new wing, the Court of Aquarius was built in 1977 which contained Montgomery Ward as an anchor and a large floor-to-ceiling aquarium. In 1978, a two story addition called the Promenade opened with O'Neil's as an anchor, a movie theater, and the Prom-N-Eat food court, the first mall food court in Summit County.

The mall began its downfall in 1991 when two fighting patrons in a scuffle knocked over a sign producing a sound similar to a gunshot and panicking a crowd. This was the same year the mall began using cheap security guards instead of police for security. The mall was also operating in a crime-ridden area. Target was added as a fifth anchor in 1995 but by then the mall began losing stores. In 2006 Target moved to nearby Wadsworth Ohio and Dillard's Clearance Center closed its doors. Macy's was gone by 2008. That same year the mall's fixtures were auctioned off and the mall was closed for good October 31, 2008 after utility disconnection.

Rolling Acres Mall was finally seized by the city of Akron in June 2016 after a long series of court battles and bankruptcies. It is expected the interior will eventually be demolished due to being destroyed by trespassers, scrappers, vandalism, and a lack of maintenance.

Comments

  • The crime rate has actually decreased dramatically in "recent" years. It was never as high as the widespread rumors touted it as being. Chapel Hill Mall currently has the highest crime rate of malls in the Akron area, and even it's relatively safe compared to most shopping centers.
