Quaker Square (Akron, Ohio)

USA / Ohio / Akron / Akron, Ohio
office building, place with historical importance, mini-mall, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places

Quaker Square, located in the heart of downtown Akron, Ohio, was a mall made out of the old Quaker Oats mill, silos and factory which originally operated there. The oat silos were transformed into dorm rooms, formally a hotel, and the factory into a 16 store mini mall. Quaker Square was at one point home to the Trackside Grille Restaurant, where one could eat on board an antique train car. The Quaker Square General Store located here once offered oatmeal cookies, pie baking classes for children, and nostalgic candies. The University of Akron purchased the facility in 2007 after the retirement of the previous owner. The hotel was closed on June 30, 2013 and was turned into student housing. The rest of the facility was closed off to the public in 2016. By 2022, the entire facility was in significant disrepair due to its age and was fully shut down.
