Site of the Famous Pilgrimage centre of the Shakti Peeth, Temple of Goddess Kamakhya. Legend has it that when Lord Shiva was roaming about the Earth with the body of his consort Sati, performing Tandava Nritya to vent his rage on her untimely death, Lord Vishnu had to sever the body of Sati into pieces with his sudarsana chakra to stop Shiva. The "Yoni Anga" fell on Nilachal Hills and thus a Shakti Peeth was established there. Pilgrims from all over India throng to this place to seek the divine blessings of Maa Kamakhya.
