Chamseongdan

Chamseongdan, located on the peak of Manisan (Mount Mani) at 472 meters/1,549 feet, is believed to be the altar which Dangun, the founding father of Korea performed ritual ceremonies. Certain rituals were held here during the Goryeo and Joseon periods as well.

The diameter of the alter base is 8.7 meters/27 feet and the square alter is 6.6 meters/22 feet. There are 21 Stone steps extending from the base to the upper platform. On the eastern side there are two sets of steps leading up to the entrance.

According to the records, the alter was renovated in 1270 and again in 1717.

There is a Korean Hornbeam tree next Chamseongdan which is Natural Monument #502 and is the first tree designated as a cultural asset.

Chamseongdan is Historic Site #136.
