Ssangchung Stone Monuments

These two stone monuments were erected to honor 60 Joseon soldiers, including General Eo Jae-yeon, who died at the Battle of Gwangseongbo in the 1871 War (Sinmy Yangyo), instigated by the invasion US naval forces.

The first of the two, Gwangseong Pasu Sunjeolbi ("Monument for the Patriotic Defenders who Perished at Gwangseong"), is 168cm tall, 62cm wide and 25cm deep. The other monument, 177cm tall, 58cm wide and 26.5cm deep, was built to honor Eo Jae-yeon and Eo Jae-sun who led the Joseon defenders during the battle. Both monuments were erected in 1873.

Annual memorial services have been held since the reign of King Gojong, first by the government and then, since 1970, by the descendants of Eo Jae-yeon.
