Sofia envisioned the convent buildings placed in a cross with the cathedral at the intersection of the north-south (the two gate churches) and east-west axes (the bell tower and the refectory church.) Dating from the 16th century, the small white Church of St. Amvrose, sitting to the left of the southern gate entrance of the monastery did not fit into this plan.

This one level church with single dome atop a green roof and triple apse was part of the original buildings. Its present appearance dates to renovations of the late 17th century. It is attached to the Palace of Irina Godunova, who retired here after the death of her husband, Tsar Fyodor I and provided refuge for her brother Boris Godunov until his election.
