Seleucia

Iraq / Bagdad / Baghdad /
city, ancient, place with historical importance, archaeological site

Ancient Seleukeia was founded by Seleukos I Nikator in the late 4th century BC (around 305 BC?). It served briefly as the capital city of the Seleucid empire, replacing Babylon as the main administrative and cultural center of central Mesopotamia. Soon after founding Antioch on the Orontes in 300 BC, Seleukos I moved his court there; nevertheless, Seleukeia remained the main administrative center of Seleucid Mesopotamia and the "Upper Provinces" of the Iranian Plateau. The city continued to exist in the subsequent Parthian period, although its function as a royal capital was taken up by Ktesiphon (Ctesiphon) across the Tigris.
