Hasankeyf (Kurmanji Kurdish: Heskîf, Arabic: حصن كيفا, Greek: Κιφας, Latin: Cepha, from Syriac: ܚܨܢ ܟܐܦܐ Ḥéṣn Kayfa) is an ancient town and district located along the Tigris River in the Batman Province in southeastern Turkey. It served as the residence of a branch of the Artuqid dynasty in the 12th century, and subsequently as a regional center under the Artuqids and Ayyubids of Amid (Diyarbakir) until the early 16th century, when it passed to Ottoman Turkey. It was declared a natural conservation area by Turkey in 1981. The modern settlement was evacuated before being submerged by the rising waters of the Ilısu Dam Reservoir. Apart from the medieval citadel to the west and a few of the craggy hills (featuring cave dwellings) on the southwestern edge of the town, all of old Hasankeyf is now underwater. A new Hasankeyf has been build by Turkish authorities for part of the old town's displaced population, and several of the historical monuments have been relocated there.
