Natchitoches is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. It was established in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, a French explorer. On the Red River, it was used as an outpost to monitor Spanish activity. Nearby was Los Adaes was a Spanish settlement, and the former capital of Tejas. Natchitoches is now the parish seat of Natchitoches Parish.
