The main hall serving as a throne room or audience chamber within the Bronze-Age palace atop the acropolis. This is where the leaders would gather for ceremonies and official business. At the center of the main chamber (which measures about 13 by 11.5 meters) are the remains of a circular hearth (now covered for protection from the elements), which is a standard feature of Mycenaean palace architecture. It measured about 3.4 meters in diameter and was surrounded by four columns supporting the roof, with an opening directly above the hearth. The present floor of the megaron is modern cement, intended to protect this portion of the site from further erosion. Such conservation efforts are responsible for the room's restored shape, as its southern half had already been lost to the erosion of the hillside by the time of excavation.
