Six North Michigan Condos (Chicago, Illinois)

USA / Illinois / Chicago / Chicago, Illinois / North Michigan Avenue, 6

This eight-story building was constructed in 1898 to house the offices of Montgomery Ward. The retailer remained in this space until 1908 when it opened the catalog warehouse complex at Chicago Avenue and the Chicago River. When it opened, this was the tallest building in Chicago.

Originally, the building had a 10-story central tower with a 3-story pyramid roof topped with am 18-foot weather vane. There was also a public observation deck. Subsequent modifications to the building added four floors to the base of the building and shortened the tower.

The building has been undergoing conversion to condominiums since approximately 2002. After changes in developers and financial problems, a completion date of summer 2008 has been announced.
