Once the home of the Miami News (and a unique vertical printing press!), this site was later used to process immigrants fleeing Castro's Cuba in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Because of this usage, and because at the time its height made it one of the first things a boat arriving at sea could see on the horizon, it became known as the 'Freedom Tower.' Its design is adapted from the Giralda bell tower in Seville, Spain.
This Freedom Tower is not to be confused with One World Trade Center in New York City.
