Built in the early 1940s to replace the original one-room school, the Wells school was originally constructed with just one floor containing four rooms. A second floor was later added, and a gym became the last addition in the 1960s.

The school also hosts the Island Mountain Arts Society's International School of the Arts each summer.

In 2002, due to government cutbacks and declining enrollment, the local school board decided to close the school. The students were to be bussed all the way to Quesnel (80 km away). But after continuing parent and community protests the decision was reversed, and the school stayed open under a special financial arrangement with the town of Wells.
