Tailings = Material rejected from a mill after most of the recoverable valuable minerals have been extracted. Normally consists of ground up rock in the sand to silt size range.

A tailings pond is usually but not always a man-made structure consisting of dykes or dams, and allows the tailings to settle before water (used in the milling process) is discharged back into the watershed.

This tailings pond is associated with the nearby Mount Polley Mine.
