Recent exploration has discovered new gold ore in and around the former Cariboo Gold Quartz mine site. Open pit mining by Barkerville Gold Mines Ltd may commence in 2014 at the head of Lowhee Gulch, and later on at Cow Mtn just south of Wells. The ore will at first be processed in the mill of the nearby QR Mine (which the company owns) while a new mill is erected at Wells.
