  • Though originally Tanais was an Ancient Greek settlement, you will see nothing like Parthenon. First, the town was destroyed three times within its history; second, from I c. AD barbarian population dominated there, so, the most buildings preserving their appearance, were built by Sarmatians, Maeotae etc.
  • HOW TO REACH. From Rostov-on-Don or Taganrog, approximately at the midpoint between them. 1) Suburban train – be attentive, if your train stops at the platform Tanais. Some express-trains miss it, and you will have to go 6 km by walk from the neighbour station, roaming in rushwood and small lakes in the delta of the Don. At the railway platform you will see the road going up – come this way. 2) Bus – there is no special station in Tanais. The regular buses go from Rostov to Taganrog and back, but a rare passenger needs to leave somewhere between. So, you should ask the driver to stop at Tanais (you will see a sign «Tanais 3 km» (in Russian)) at the route, and be ready that you will pay the total price, as if you go from Rostov to Taganrog. (That is because, having put you off, the driver will find nobody for your place, so, it does not make sense for him to catch you for a half-price; moreover, there are always many people who need pass all the route from Rostov to Taganrog). Standing near the sign you will see the road going south, to the Don. Go by this way and in 30 minutes you’ll be on the spot.
