This was the main German airfield for resupplying the encircled Sixth Army in Stalingrad. On December 24, 1942, T-34 tanks from the Soviet 24th Tank Corps attacked the airfield, taking the ground crew completely by surprise. 72 aircraft, 10% of the Luftwaffe's transport fleet, were destroyed on the ground.
