"King George III spent 14 summers here with the royal family between 1789 and 1805, and established Weymouth as a major seaside resort. With its soft, golden sands and sheltered bay it became George's favourite place to be. Before long, Weymouth had visitors rich and famous flocking to the resort and others along the Dorset coast.
The Kings Statue, situated on the seafront, was commissioned by the 'Grateful Inhabitants' of Weymouth and unveiled in 1810 to commemorate the royal patronage."
