Uncommon for Ukrainian language city name in feminine refers to the word 'station' (станція Попасна), the settlement developed from Khutir Klenovyi ('mapple hamlet') and built in it station named after southwestward village Popasna (now Kalyno-Popasna).
In Soviet times Popasna was renamed for few years to "Imeni Kohanovycha" ("named after Kahanovych", 1938-1943) then renamed back.
