Formerly known as Fort Story, it was acquired in 1914 and designated in honor of Maj. Gen. John P. Story, Chief of Artillery, 1904 to 1905.

Only U.S. Army facility in South Hampton Roads.

Formerly the home to the 2nd Company, Coast Defenses of Chesapeake Bay from 1919 to 1922, elements of 12th Coast Artillery from 1924 to 1932, elements of 2nd Coast Artillery from 1932 to 1941, the 1st Battalion, 71st Coast Artillery in 1941, the 71st Coast Artillery in 1941.

Sub-installation of Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek.
