Originally the Santa Fe Railroad Hospital, the hospital was constructed for railroad employees in 1938. It is rumored that Howard Hughes would visit the hospital during his time in Los Angeles, occupying the entire top floor of the hospital by himself during his stays.
The hospital ceased operation as a medical facility in 1990. Since that time, it has been used primarily as a filming location. Notable works shot on location at Linda Vista include Outbreak, End of Days, Pearl Harbor, the pilot for ER and the music video for Garbage song "Bleed Like Me".

Currently, the hospital it is being redeveloped for use as mid-income condominiums.

The hospital was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in January 2006.
