Agastya Malai, Tamil: அகத்தியர் கூடம்) (also known as Agastyarkoodam or Agasthyakoodam) is a 1,868 metres (6,129 ft) peak within Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Western Ghats of South India. The mountain lies on the border between the Indian states of Kerala (in Thiruvananthapuram District) and Tamil Nadu (in Tirunelveli). It is also the highest peak of both Thiruvananthapuram and Tirunelveli districts. The perennial Thamarabarani River originates from this hill and flows into the Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu. The peak is also the highest point in the Neyyar and Thamarabarani River basins.

Agastya Mala is a pilgrimage centre for devotees of the Hindu sage Agastya, who is considered to be one of the seven rishis (Saptarishi) of Hindu Puranas. The Tamil language is considered to be a boon from Agasthya. There is a full-sized statue of Agastya at the top of the peak and the devotees can offer pujas themselves. Agasthyar was a sage of Dravidians and is considered to be one of the seven Rishis (Saptharshis) of Hindu mythology. Tamil language is considered to be a boon from Agasthyar.

  • http://forest.kerala.gov.in/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=159&Itemid=289 I had been to this place travelling from the Neyyar dam catchment area circa 1986. Did come across a crystal clear water stream, a dip was so refreshing. It must be the water coming through the herbs. There was a KTDC building in the forest that was stripped even of the WC. Had seen a large cast iron gear wheel, the left over from an abandoned observatory of the British period. The sky was so bright in the night without any lights around in that area. The reason why the observatory was there.
  • Good work
  • Agasthyamalai Hills. The Pothigai Hills, (Elevation 1,866 m, 6,122 ft) also known as the Agasthiyar Malai are in the Ashambu Hills, part of the Anaimalai Hills in the southern part of the Western Ghats of South India. Legend says that the sage Agastya (also written as Agasthiyar or Agathiyar) is said to have provided the grammar for the Tamil language. The western slope is located in the Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala state, eastern slope of Pothigai hills is in the Tirunelveli District, Southern slope is located in Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu. At 1,866 meters, it is the highest peak in the rugged Ashambu hills, which have one of the richest concentrations of biodiversity in the Western Ghats. The area is known for its spectacular views, beautiful forests and waterfalls, ancient temples, and the river Tamirabarani, According to the Mahābhārata, Lord Shiva sent the two saints (or sages) Vyasa and Agastya, down to Earth, to create the divine languages, Sanskrit and Tamil. Agathiyar came to Pothigai and established the Tamil culture. After establishing the Sidhar Gnana Koodam center for scientific research, and later traveling throughout the world, spreading the knowledge gained, Agathiyar returned to a spot in the Pothigai hills, where he merged into the cosmos. A temple has been built for him at this spot, close to the Papanasam Falls on the banks of the Thamirabarani River. It is said that Sage Agathiyar occasionally gives appearances to sincere aspirants and devotees.

  • Passes issued by Kerala Forest Department in the first or second week of January every year. This will be notified in local news papers. The season is from 15 Jan to 15 March. Last year when I visited, the fee was Rupees 500 per head. Every day 100 passes only. Weekends will get booked in no time. The pass is issued from PTP Nagar office of the department in Thiruvananthapuram. Off-season visit also allowed at a higher rate of Rupees 5000 for a group of minimum 4 persons. But base camp will not have canteen facilities. The distance to be traversed are Pick up point to basecamp (18km), basecamp to peak (6km). Total walking to and fro will be 48km. So consider travelling in 3 days, otherwise it is very tedious and tiresome. After getting pass, you have to report to pick up point near Bonacaud Estate on the designated day at 9am. Travel from city to estate takes approx 3hrs. There are no hotels or lodging facility at pick up point.
