demolished, tropospheric scatter station, former air force base
Operational from 1958 to 1979, the Aniak White Alice Communications System (WACS) site, callsign ANI, provided a troposcatter communications relay between the Sparrevohn AFS site to the East and the Bethel AFS site to the Southwest via 135 and 95 mile shots respectively. Built alongside the Aniak Airport, the troposcatter billboard antennae were painted with a red and white checkerboard pattern for visibility.
Idled in 1979 and repurposed as the Aniak Middle School from 1981 until 2003, the site enviromentally remediated by 2005 during "Operation Clean Sweep".
