This is where the Berlin Wall started to fall, on the 9th of October 1989. A government spokesman announced free passage on November 9, the day before it was to take effect. But he mistakenly said the decision was effective immediately. Within hours, East German border guards threw up their hands, stopped demanding visas and allowed throngs of East Berliners through to West Berlin, beginning at Bornholmer Bridge.
