Sam Bell Maxey served in the U.S.–Mexico War and Civil War and was a two-term U.S. senator. In March 1971, the Maxey House was officially listed in the National Register of Historical Places. Restoration was completed Sept. 1, 1980 and it opened to the public for tours.
