Also known as the "Hillsboro Site 1 Impoundment Project", this area was a former agricultural area, to be used as a buffer between the wetland preserve and the communities nearby. It was originally slated to become a landfill for southern Palm Beach County, but was protested by Fran Reich, who formed the West Boca Community Council to have a voice for non-municipal residents in western Palm Beach County.

The purpose of this preserve is to supplement water deliveries to the Hillsboro Canal by capturing and storing excess water currently discharged to the Intracoastal Waterway. These supplemental deliveries will reduce demands on Lake Okeechobee and Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. The impoundment pool will also provide groundwater recharge, reduce seepage from adjacent natural areas, and prevent saltwater intrusion by releasing impounded water back to the Hillsboro Canal when conditions dictate.
