Established in 1908, the Ocala National Forest is the 2nd largest National Forest in Florida, the oldest east of the Mississippi River, and the southernmost in the continental U.S.

The forest covers approximately 607 square miles (1,572.12 km2) of Central Florida. It is situated between the Ocklawaha River and the St. Johns River within the counties of Marion, Lake , Putnam, & Seminole.

"Ocala" is thought to be a derivative of a Timucuan Indian term meaning "fair land" or "big hammock".
