The Compton Hill Water Tower is one of three historical water towers still standing in St. Louis. All are on the National Registry of Historic Places (Compton Hill as of 1972.) St. Louis is home of three of only seven such towers remaining in the USA. It was built in 1898, when William McKinley was president, became operational in 1899, and stands 179 feet tall. It was retired as an active water tower in 1929. It is a beautiful Romanesque structure, but began to fall into disrepair in the 1980’s and was closed to the public. In 1995 St. Louis City approved a $19 million renovation project which was completed in 1999. The tower in now fully restored (though not an active water tower) and is open to the public on special occasions.
