Forney is located in northwestern Kaufman County on U.S. Highway 80 about twenty three miles east of Dallas, Texas. The 2007 population was estimated at 14,154.

Originally named Brooklyn, early citizen changed the name in honor of the Texas and Pacific Railway and in hopes of getting federal approval for a post office. They chose Forney after the civil engineer John Wien Forney who directed T&P in the area.

The city of Forney attracted residents with the railroad, fertile land, and close proximity to Dallas.

Today Forney is largely agricultural with a few manufacturing companies in the area, but is mostly known as the 'Antique Capital of Texas' as named by the Texas legislature in 1987.
