  • This area contain two major lakes formed by dams constructed on and into the White River. Up until that time the White was a free flowing, crystal clear water way with a long reach down to the Mississippi River to the south. The Buffalo, a now nationally protected river, flows in the White in Baxter County to the southwest of Mountain Home and is much enjoyed for float trips, as the White is nationally known for its fishing. Historically the White was traveled by steam boat, replaced by trains. Up until WWII the majority of this rural area was crossed only on dirt roads, and lacking bridges, the White was only crossed by use of a series of small private ferries. Today things are ... slightly better.
