Samuel T. Shaw Cottage (Centre Island, New York)

USA / New York / Centre Island / Centre Island, New York
LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, historical layer / disappeared object

Purchased by Shaw after sale of Harbour Point. Although the small colonial revival house is now on a separate lot to the North of Centre Island Road, the property originally included a unique stone underpass along with a connected stone kiosk (still extant) and a strip of land running south all the way to the shore. The underpass allowed Shaw access to the water from his home.

Shaw moved his bathhouse, formerly his houseboat, which had been mounted on a dock on his property abutting the Seawanhaka club to a position at the south end of the long strip at the shorefront of this property. That boathouse stood for more than 110 years on Centre Island's shore but was razed in 2007.

The underpass was renovated in 2008 to incorporate a fish pond and waterfall in place of the old passageway.
