Mona Island

Puerto Rico / Mayaguez-Aguadilla / Rincyn /
 island, forest, National Natural Landmark

Amazing nature reserve. You need a permit to camp and it usually takes a few months to process, so request it early. Certain tour companies (or private boat captains) can arrange for fresh supplies to be delivered every day.

Mona and Monito Islands are both home to sea caves that are some of the most extensive flank margin-type caves in the world. Additionally, the islands contain important seabird rookeries. They are designated a National Natural Landmark for these reasons.

  • The english translation of this island is Monkey Island. I really don\'t know why that name. This wonderful Island is the property of Puerto Rico, USA.
  • Regarding the english translation of the name, "Mona" can mean monkey, but it can also mean beautiful--~~~~
  • Yeah..."Monkey Lisa" didn't quite make any sense to me either.
  • In venetian dialect, "Mona" means something like "...Pussy" but I really don't think this is the case.
  • the name comes from the taino name for the island, "Amona", with an accent on the last syllable. There are no monkeys and although it is a gorgeous island, the name has nothing to do with its beauty or with pussy. :)
  • Uh I think the language used here is SPANISH, not ITALIAN. It is not even a European dilect at all but a Carribean one. Please don't confuse the two.
  • Enrique, you are correct. Amona was the original name given by the Taino indigenous culture now extinct. It meant "in the middle" because it was a stepping stone between Puerto Rico (called Boriken by the Tainos) and Haiti/Dominican Republic in their trips between the islands. The Spanish subsequently shortened the name to something more familiar, hence Mona.
