Bare Beach

USA / Florida / Lake Harbor /
 village, ghost town

The village of Bare Beach (Some maps marks this as "Little Bare Beach") started in 1916 by Steve and William Hooker of Arcadia, as a place to grow tomatoes. It was named for having a fine, but hard sandy soil, and also unusual in that it had a hardwood hammock for shade. Docks were built to ship the produce to Miami. Rising waters of Lake Okeechobee due to heavy rainfall in 1922 and 1923 put paid to the farming efforts, so the workers slowly left. When the water receded, the sugar companies took over the land, and Bare Beach was no more.
