Sunniland started as a small farming community in the 1930s and was a midway point between Immokalee and Everglades for the the Atlantic Coast Railroad's Harrisburg-Everglades City branch. Now it is a small village along State Road 29 near Big Cypress Preserve and Florida panther habitats.

This community built a large shipping railway depot. Sunniland's prosperity tripled in 1943 when Florida's first commercial oil well began producing crude. Eventually, a 94-mile pipeline was built to carry the crude to Port Everglades on the East Coast.
