Howard E. Jones Residence

USA / New Jersey / Bayonne / Narrows Avenue, 8220
house, Tudor (architecture), interesting place, historic landmark, 1917_construction

Residence designed by James Sarsfield Kennedy c. 1917 in a mix between the Tudor and Arts & Crafts style for Howard E. Jones who was a shipping executive. The home sits on top of a rolling hill, on a parcel that occupies the entire blockfront along Narrows Avenue. The interior is replete with details like wrought iron hardware, leaded glass windows, hand-painted fabric ceilings, wooden paneling, and intricate strapwork ceilings. The architectural design sought to undercut the rise of industrialization and mechanization in late 19th century life by emphasizing the use of natural materials, craftsmanship, and picturesque silhouette and profile. From the Gingerbread Home's undulating thatched-remiscient roof to the abundant hand-painted glass panels throughout, many original aspects of the home that won exterior landmarks recognition in 1988 and the nickname of Brooklyn's "Gingerbread House".
