The Citadel of Damascus is a bastion located at the north-west corner of the fortified old city. Damascus is an ancient royal city of princes who ruled over Syria at the end of the 11th century up to the 13th century and is one of the jewels in the crown of medieval military architecture in Syria.

  • Not much to see except the ancient walls. Outside, a monument to Salah-ad-Din defeating crusiders; Richard Lion andd his conrades seat under the leaping horse of Salah-ad-Din. 50 meters from the monument, on the bank of Barada river, houses overhang the brownish waters, the place is nicknamed "Sirian Venice". Close to the gates, halfway to the souq, there is the Bimaristan - a medieval hospital with a museum of Arabic medicine. Close to the latter, market of jewellery.
