Old Damascus "Demashque": The Oldest Inhabited City In The World; for 7500 Years!
The true heart of the city! To walk here is like walking back in history…and I mean history…hundreds and hundreds of years. Unfortunately all know this but the people in charge of tourism in Syria. You simply need a good imagination in order to appreciate this place…first you have to look while filtering out the over-whelming air and noise pollutions, the “I have no idea what I am doing here” traffic-policemen, the “I have no idea why I using the horn” taxis, and a whole lot of rubbish (I can go on and on)…then you see the city as our grandfathers saw it. A city rich in history…a city where mosques, churches, and synagogues were build right next to each other in harmony…a city where neighbors were more than neighbors they were an extension of one’s family…a city that that smelled jasmine and roses (damn a famous rose is called after the city)…a city that had free drinking water fountains at each street corner…a city with a heart!

According to Arab sources the roman city had 7 gates. In the Arab Middle ages were maden some realignments, which still can be seen in any aerial view of the city. The section between the Gate of Safety (Bab as-Salama) and Thomas Gate (Bab Touma) is the best preserved part of the wall.
