Laid down at General Dynamics Electric Boat in May 1952, the USS Marlin commissioned into US Navy service in November 1953 as a member of the US Atlantic Fleet.

As the second member of an experimental class, the Marlin was one of the smallest operational submarines ever built for the Navy and was used mainly as a target and training ship and has helped to evaluate submarine and antisubmarine equipment and tactics. She remained based out of US Naval Station Key West for her entire career, and decommissioned from active service in January 1973.

Following her decommissioning, the Marlin was donated to Freedom Park and was put on display as a memorial to US Submariners in 1974.
